Why atheists and fundamentalists are both idiots

Stephen Hawking is fairly sacrosanct among intellectuals. Really most people. As Homer put it, “the wheelchair guy” is Heralded every few seconds.

And probably should be. He’s a smart motherfucker.

But this article on illustrates to me why, generally, either extreme point of view is usually a little batshit nuts, and often fully batshit nuts.

Far left liberals are usually crazy (I’ve lived in the northeast all my life; I know of what I speak), and far-right conservatives are fucking crazy too.

The answer’s really pretty simple:

Humans want simplicity. We want to think as little as possible. Unfortunately, to fully appreciate a subject (ANY subject) is to accept that it’s usually a blend of seemingly-contradictory truths, truths that don’t pan out simply and leave you with an explanation that’s neat and tidy.

Why do you think The Masses love procedurals. They wrap up. They wouldn’t be popular if they didn’t fulfill an intrinsic human need.

Unfortunately, the answer is usually somewhere in the middle of the continuum.

So in the above-referenced article, it lists several things attributed to Hawking’s work. I’m looking at number 8:

The universe is its own creator

One of the most talked-about assertions in the whole book is that we don’t need the Idea of God to explain what sparked the creation of the universe.

“It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going,” Hawking and Mlodinow write.

Instead, the laws of science alone can explain why the universe began. Our modern understanding of time suggests that it is just another dimension, like space. Thus it doesn’t have a beginning.

“Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing,” they write. “Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist.”

Really?! Seriously Hawking? A washed-up journalist has to tell you this?

Okay here goes:

“God” is clearly semantics! Get with it! Who gives a fuck what you name this thing that encompasses us all! Christians wanna call it God, Atheists biology or The Universe, Confucius called it the Tao, Buddhists call it The Buddha (or don’t call it anything), George Lucas called it The Force….

You’re arguing about a word— which is a croak of syllables we form using vocal chords (i.e., an organ originally used to growl)?

Are you just reacting, in a subtly passive-aggressive way, to someone in your past who was Judeo-Christian?

You should be above that, Scientist.

Stay focused motherfucker.
